"Do you know who the (truly) bankrupt person is?"
The Prophet, peace be upon him, asked:
“Do you know who the (truly) bankrupt person is?”
They (the companions) said:
“The bankrupt among us is the one who has no wealth nor possessions.”
The Messenger of Allah replied:
“The (truly) bankrupt from my Ummah is the one who comes on the Day of Judgement (having done his) prayer, fasting and zakah, but he (also) abused this one, falsely accused that one, wrongfully took the wealth of this one, spilled the blood of that one, and beat this one. So his good deeds will be given to those (who suffered at his hands). If his good deeds fall short before he can repay (them), their sins will be given to him and he will be thrown in the Fire.”
(At-Tirmidhi, Sahih)
This hadith unequivocally proves that worship is not just the physical acts that we do between us and Allah. It is how we treat other humans, on a day-to-day basis, for the sake of Allah. A person can pray, fast, make Hajj, read Quran, etc, but if they are oppressing and harming people with their hands or tongue, there is no guarantee that they will find any reward left for them on the Day of Judgement. Be good to others — not just for their sake or to please them, but for the sake of Allah and His pleasure.
