How to Come Close to Allah

“I want to get closer to Allah, I want to love and worship Him more, but I cant seem to get there no matter what?” The answer to that is to begin anywhere. Show Allah your sincerity by just starting — and don’t look back. Keep pushing yourself to achieve the greatest goal on earth — coming close to Allah.

Allah sees your effort and perseverance, no matter how small, and will multiply and bless it. You will find your heart filling with love for Him and the desire to please and worship Him even more, as He the Exalted said:

وَإِنْ تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ بِشِبْرٍ، تَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْهِ ذِرَاعًا، وَإِنْ تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ ذِرَاعًا، تَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْهِ بَاعًا وَإِنْ أَتَانِي يَمْشِي، أَتَيْتُهُ هَرْوَلَةً

“And if he draws near to Me an handspan, I draw near to him an armslength, and if he draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him a armspan. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.”

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:

‎وإذا اجْتَهَدَ واسْتَعانَ بِاَللَّهِ تَعالى ولازَمَ الِاسْتِغْفارَ والِاجْتِهادَ فَلا بُدَّ أنْ يُؤْتِيَهُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ ما لَمْ يَخْطُرْ بِبالِ… فَإنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ: والَّذِينَ جاهَدُوا فِينا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنا

“When a person perseveres, relies on Allah and keeps seeking forgiveness and persevering (to come close to Him) — there is no doubt Allah will give him from His bounty, in a way that he can’t even imagine. Allah says in (the Quran): ‘As for those who persevere for Us (i.e. our sake), We will surely guide them to Our paths. And verily, Allah is with those who do good.’”
