A reminder from our Prophet that will help you focus on what is important in life

Our Prophet (peace be upon) would often remind his companions of the shortness of this life and its temporary nature. He would remind them to think of death often. This is not so that they would be saddened, but so that they could focus on what’s actually important in this life and focus on working for the eternal and everlasting life.

He, peace be upon him, said, “You should frequently remember ‘the destroyer of pleasures,’ (i.e. death).” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hasan)

Despite the heaviness of remembering death, it gives us a solid and sound perspective on life and what is important and keeps us away from falling into sins and mistakes. It is a reminder to turn to Allah constantly and repent for our sins.

Knowing and remembering that this life is short and that we will soon meet our Lord keeps our goals lofty and noble, and gives us the endurance to withstand the hardships of this life.

Abdullah ibn Umar said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) put his hand on my shoulder and told me:

‘Be in this world as if you are a stranger or a traveler along a path.’”

Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say:

“If you make it to the evening, do not wait for the morning. If you make it to the morning, do not wait for the evening. Take from your health for your sickness, and from your life for your death.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)
